Dark lords. Unique, unapologetic, and relentless in their thirst for power. Dark lords like Darth Vader, Voldemort, and Sauron have always been the most iconic and captivating characters in history. Competition in the performance and luxury SUV space is getting tighter yearly. Rivals like the Lamborghini Urus and the Porsche Cayenne are stealing most of the attention prior to the first XM's arrival. To answer this, BMW brought the dark lord to the party with the BMW XM Label Red.

With its introduction at Auto Shanghai 2023, the M-exclusive BMW XM Label Red becomes the most powerful model in the M lineup. At a price tag of $159,000, the BMW XM is one of the most expensive vehicles in BMW's lineup. As official price figures are yet to come out, the Label Red expects to surpass the first XM's hefty price tag, coming close to $200,000.

Living up to its promise to be uncompromising, BMW doubled down on its angular, futuristic styling. This made the XM stand out among its smoother-lined competitors. The Label Red is a performance SUV that doesn't pretend to be a sports car like its competitors do. It is a beast of an SUV that exudes power with its styling, and creates power under the hood.

Only the best-performing packages from BMW deserve the M badge. On the BMW XM Label Red, this comes from the colossal hybrid power plant under the hood. The Label Red runs on a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that hits up to 585 HP at 5,600 RPM. The internal combustion motor runs in unison with a plug-in electric motor that produces 197 HP. With both engines performing in sync, they produce 748 HP and pack a heavy punch with 738 ft-lbs of torque. The XM Label Red beats the previous XM models by almost 100 HP. It has the most power in a BMW M model ever built.

Putting that power to the ground is an 8-speed automatic transmission that helps it go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds. While its top speed tops out at 155 mph, it can go up to 180 mph with the optional M Driver's Package.

One of the biggest benefits of having a hybrid engine is the efficiency it achieves. The V8 under the XM Label Red is the most efficient V8 ever built at an average of 170 MPG as claimed by BMW, but real world fuel economy figures are yet to be tested by the EPA. Running on the electric motor alone, the Label Red can have up to 47–52 miles of range. Combining the best of both worlds, a full 18.2-gallon tank on the XM Label Red can drive beyond the range of even the most efficient electric vehicles. However, this efficiency comes with a drawback.

BMW XM Performance SUV Weighs A Staggering 6000 Pounds

Despite having the most powerful motor in the M lineup, the XM Label Red's own weight weighs itself down. Tons of extra power can come from a huge V8 engine, two turbochargers, and an electric motor. However, those extra parts also meant tons of surplus weight as well. The BMW XM Label Red is a 6,000-pound behemoth of an SUV. It is much heavier than competitors like the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne, tipping in at 5,250 and 4,802 lbs. respectively.

Because of the ballast weight, the XM Label Red posts a slower, yet still nearly identical 0-60 mph time with its quicker, lighter sibling, the BMW X5 M Competition. The X5 clocks a 0-62 mph time at 3.8 seconds, while the XM Label Red is a tenth of a second slower at 3.9 seconds.

With a gargantuan SUV weighing this much, you cannot expect it to come with anything less than BMW's most powerful engine. While some others may think of the weight as a disadvantage, some would also argue that it is also the XM Label Red's biggest advantage.

The XM Label Red's Aggressive Styling Commands Respect

Those familiar with BMW's naming system would immediately notice that the name "Label Red" is unheard of from anything in BMW's lineup. This is because the purpose of the XM Label Red is to stand out. One glance at it, and you'll immediately see how big and imposing it is. When sitting beside its smoother-styled competitors, the XM Label Red's massive front end, red accent lines, and aggressive bends immediately grabs attention better than its smooth, aerodynamic competitors.

The XM Label Red will come in 4 different color styles. One of them will have flat black paint and brighter red accents, including a crimson highlight around its massive kidney grill. This is a special black-and-red edition limited to only 500 units worldwide. If the XM looks like a Stormtrooper, this version of the XM Red Label would remind one of Darth Vader and his red lightsaber ready to pounce on his prey. Massive. Imposing. Unapologetic. Uncompromising.

It was never a quality of SUVs to be lightweight, quick, and nimble. Like the dark lords it emulates, the Label Red is meant to be big, imposing, and powerful. Its size demands attention. Its styling demands respect. No other SUV in the market commands that presence and embodies power both literally and figuratively like the BMW XM Label Red.
